New Babbage

Found this interesting (if rather LENGTHY) article on Victorian dance etiquette... just in case the reason men in Babbage are reluctant to dance is for fear of improper manners...

Thank you for this most en-lighting article.
It makes me empathize with Mr. Darcy, in Pride and Prejudice, even more than I already did.

Well dancing is for girls and fops as we all know and now i aint allowed to bring explosives or incendries there int much fun to be had other than watching you bunch go through yer mating rituals. Fair enough theres always some good folk about but once they get past their third glass of wine they all get slobbery over each other or bang on about nothing.

I do like to pop my head in though, someones got to make sure you arnt getting above yourselves.

as to etiquette, theres too much of the stuff if you ask me! And is it any wonder the blokes dont want to dance if they have to touch GIRLS to do it?! maybe you could issue welding gloves or something if you are really so keen, you can't expect men to go all out shedding thier masculinity and not meet them half way

OOoo i like this Satan Claws chap! I've heard loads about him and his elves and knowing the elves i do i bet they are a pretty hard and snooty bunch! I've heard he leaves presents! I bet they are brilliant! not like all the bloody coal and socks i usually get!

It'd be really hard to weld a ball wouldnt it? Itd keep rolling away

Ah young Bob. When you grow up and your voice breaks and you look less like Macaulay Culkin you'll find it's WOMEN and not girls who are far more interesting. Little girls are charming in their innocence and naivety but a woman can be a companion, sounding board and a reality check all rolled in to one. Some even so much so that you want to have them around all the time :-)

Just for you Ed...

Have you heard yourself?! Why in gods name do i want any of those things?! a companion to bore me with chattering? A sounding board? Fair enough if you have doubts and are often wrong, i am not limited by the lack of intelligence like some and a reality check?! My reality works fine! Sorry to hear yours doesnt you nutter!

I used to think you were a clever chap sir but now it seems like you've gone all gushy. Is that asylum open yet? looks like we got a new inmate!

Egads - posts like that and responses like Miss Riel's are why I don't attend more balls and dances. As an admitted social miscreant and something of a wallflower, I feel extremely uncomfortable with the social pressure to dance with strangers. For that matter, BlakOpal usually winds up having to chase me down (in both SL and RL) to get me to dance with her. Saying hello's and following IM's/conversations can be difficult enough for me, and it's made that much more difficult as time goes on and the lag grows thicker. As it is I've missed out on a few opportunities to dance with someone I'm actually interested in dancing with, simply because I was lost in another window when they kindly offered to let my avatar step on their avatar's toes.

The only reason I keep turning up at Piermont Landings is that I keep feeling welcome and under no pressure to click on a couples dance, either with Miss BlakOpal or anyone else. Please don't take that away from me.

*wonders quietly if men who dislike dancing might like it more if they didn't get the feeling that every woman was expecting to be swept off her feet and whisked away to "happy ever after"*

.
.
.

these commercials for romance and happy ever after are part of the problem. What man can live up to that? And how many ladies are longing for it? Seems to me that there is far too much expectation put onto people to be "that lady" or to be "that man". In addition to all the other pressures I have mentioned in my other post.
