New Babbage

A Steampunk Community

Every year people tie themselves into knots to entertain each other, and i think that needs recognizing. How about an "oscar" style award, and we'll call it, hmmmmm... the Babbies? at least until someone comes up with a better name.

Here are some categories i came up with off the top of my head:

Best machinima
Best Hero (male & female)
Best Villian (male & female)
Best Sidekick (supporting role : hero, but i honestly can't think of anyone)
Best Lacky (supporting role : villian, probably have enough to go male & female)
Best major story (city-wide roleplay)
Best minor story (the little ones we tell to each other in twos and threes and blogs)
Best build in support of a roleplay
Best new avatar (male, female, and group) - because some folks just are.

others?

The heros, villians, sidekicks, and lackeys would have to be nominated with reference to the story they were in.

What say you?

And I am sure you are right, but it is unrealistic to expect the world to be covered in bubble-wrap simply because we weren't chosen for baseball games as a child.

You are quite correct! I don't expect coddling due to a bad experience with dodgeball as a kid (but my gosh it was bad! hah.) I wanted to just hurl those notions out there due to your exclaimation of surprise. A glimpse at human nature was all.

Indeed Mr. Underby. Most of us do not, as Miss Writer has so eloquently explained. However, rp is a huge umbrella and how do you determine which one was the "best", which person performed "best" in which rp? If you leave it up to voting, it will, at some point, degrade into a popularity contest which will cause festering feelings under the surface. A sad fact, but a fact none the less. Babbage has seen more than it's fair share of dramatics because of hurt feelings.

However, that being said.. who is going to determine what roleplays, who gets nominated, what role is more important than the other? I don't even KNOW what the roleplays that are going on.

How 'bout the Broken Panes Award?

according to Wiki, and I quote: "Babbage once counted all the broken panes of glass of a factory, publishing in 1857 a "Table of the Relative Frequency of the Causes of Breakage of Plate Glass Windows": Of 464 broken panes, 14 were caused by "drunken men, women or boys"."

sort of sounds right for the City, doncha know...

I agree with Canolli, there's a real danger it could end up nothing more than a popularity contest. Some might also argue there is already a degree of communal backslapping in New Babbage without it needing to take the form of an awards ceremony, whilst others who contribute/have contributed (and don't worry i'm not including myself here!) get overlooked.

And a Film Festival? Ye gods....but i guess most folks know my views on Babbage "theme" seemingly becoming looser and looser already.

That's not to say I have anything against Machinima, on the contrary I am a huge admirer of much of it, but like the Ning, it exists independently of SL and surely should remain *about* New Babbage rather than *in* it?

I also wonder, if that is to be a category, how many nominees there would be and how predictable the result might be. Surely (insert norse god-named resident here)'s talent and contribution is already well recognised, and such recognition doesn't need dressing up as a competition?

true, all true.

i find it interesting that 'new babbage' will return an entire page of videos on youTube. That is pretty impressive.

I think there's value in a film festival - beyond our borders. A way to introduce others to our town, and what we are capable of. Awards are one thing, but a film festival is a great idea regardless.

How about a kinescope festival, then?
