New Babbage

A Steampunk Community

I live in the Northeast and there are many former industrial cities here. Many of them have great Latin motto's reflecting their industrial might. Here are two of my favorites and I'd love to know what ones you all know off.

Holyoke, MA (my home town) Industria Et Copia: Industry and Supply (sometimes translated as "Industry and Plenty" or "Industry and Resources")

Waterbury, CT (once home of many clockworks) Quid Aere Perennius: What Is More Lasting Than Brass?

A good friend of mine used to have a cross stitch on her wall that said:
Prohibeus Illi Stercum
She translated that as "Stop that sh**", but I think the translation may be off.

Of course, my favorite would have to be "Reformo ex Profundum".
"Remade from/by the abyss/sea". I even like the ambiguity of it.
Of course, I may be a little biased on that one. ;)

Speaking OOC, a few years ago I was very into latin. I kept a record of my favorite phrases, in case the need ever came up. And preparation has paid off!

The mottos:
"Per aspera ad astra." - Through the thorns, to the stars.
"Dum spiro, spero." - As long as there is breath, there is hope.
"Clamo, clamatis, omnes clamamus pro glace lactis." - I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

The conversation:
"Vah! Denuone Latine loquebar? Me ineptum. Interdum modo elabitur." - Oh! Was I speaking Latin again? Silly me. Sometimes it just slips out.
"Amicule, deliciae, num is sum qui mentiar tibi?" - Baby, sweetheart, would I lie to you?
"Braccae tuae aperiuntur" - Your fly is open.
"Estne volumen in toga, an solum tibi libet me videre?" - Is that a scroll in your toga, or are you just happy to see me?

The curses:
"Unitam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant!" - May faulty logic undermine your entire philosophy!
"Utinam barbari spatium proprium tuum invadant!" - May barbarians invade your personal space!
"Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam." - I have a catapult. Give me all your money or I will fling an enormous rock at your head.

and of course,

"Absum!" - I'm outta here!

"Estne juxtim caupona?" - Is there a tavern nearby?
"Da mihi fermentum." - Give me a beer.
"Estne pugio in tunica, an tibi libet me videre?" - Is that a dagger in your tunic, or are you pleased to see me?
"Non me rape si tibi placet." - Please don't rob me.
"Ursus perpauli cerebri sum." - I am a bear of very little brain.
"Fortasse, haec olim meminisse nobis juvabit." - Perhaps we'll look back at this one day and smile.
