New Babbage

A Steampunk Community

not sure if this should go in this forum, or the in-character rp forum, but does anyone know of any other steampunk themed sims for roleplay? seeing as to how Rivettown is now apparently a Gor sim, i'm looking for other spots to visit now

I thought Rivet Town wasn't closing until the end of March?

As a resident and fan, I'm biased towards New Babbage of course. Unlike Rivet Town, the RP here is completely optional. Caledon is a bit further away from Babbage's theme - it's heart is in the 19th century but is a less industrial form of the genre. In Vernian terms, I'd say Babbage is more 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea where Caledon is more Around The World In A Day. North of Caledon but connected to that massive build you'll find Winterfell. It's on the early edge of steampunk, and while Tesla coils aren't welcome, mechanical things and gear-driven devices are. Winterfell leans more towards a medieval fairytale. And then there's Steelhead - what a remarkable place. Not being familiar with the books/comics much of it draws from, I'm certainly not doing it any justice - but Steelhead takes the genre in another unique and wonderful genre. Gaslight Fantasy is what I think they're using to describe it. Pacific Northwestern US setting, generally late 19th century, with a heaping helping of mad science and a nod to fantasy genres.

I'm sure there are some others, but that's what comes immediately to mind..

Herr Zanzibar (and Herr Footman),

I think your analogies and summaries are well composed, and on behalf of Steelhead's management in particular, I thank you for the compliments. Steelhead has indeed adopted the 'gaslamp fantasy' descriptor the Professors Foglio coined to describe their semi-fictional historical romance presentation of the histories of ..., as they started with many residents firmly rooted in the realms of Magic rather than Science - elves, demi-goddesses, werewolves - but also have attracted an interesting set of Sparks, such as Frau Tensai Hilra and Herr Doktor Darien Mason.

Most of the storytelling has gone on in the journals of the Sheriff, Fuzzball Ortega and his Time Lord cousin, Purdie Uggla; Commodore Hotspur O'Toole; and Her Grace Eva Bellambi, Duchess of Skye, with participation by Dr Mason and his family members.

However, there has been no substantial RP conducted. The Managers are a bit wary of such, as they wish to ensure a 'drama'-free community as much as possible, but are not closed to something playful, carefully build and well-run.

Yrs.,

oh yeah, i'm biased for Babbage too, but like visiting other sims sometimes too.
Rivet town, I was there a day or two ago and everything was now Gor, no interest in Gor, it's just not my thing. Caledon I've visited, it's alright but a bit too colorful for me, winterfell's pretty cool though. and i've never been to steelhead, i'll have to check it out then, thanks

I like to pop into the other sims now & then, too, if for no other reason than to perhaps visit a shop I like. I've found Babbage to be wonderful since my own tastes go more for the steampunk side of things rather than Victorian. One place in Caledon that seems to stand out is Steam SkyCity. Primarily it's a fascinating floating complex, but there are some islands just below (much of the sim below is a prim farm for SSC). In fact, I almost bought a parcel there, just before I discoveed (and bought) the one I have now in Port Babbage. Close call, I'm glad I'm in Port !!

What's this about Rivet Town & Gor? I knew it was mandatory RP (which is why I stayed away). Has it been Gorean and is still closing as announced? Or are there plans for it to become Gorean after it closes as Rivet Town? Just curious, hadn't heard about any of this.

I don't know, I only know last i went there, all the steampunkiness of the place was gone and everything was Gor. it might have closed and goreans bought the sim, it's happened to a few sims I used to like way back when, with the exception of a starwars sim i used to like, it's now part of a fantasy drow city.

Steamsky city's pretty nice, it's an impressive build that's for sure, i've flown around in their rezzed ornithoptor's before

I thought Armada was more piratey and mermaidy than steampunk, am I wrong there? Hard to tell, as every time I've asked someone involved for more info or a link I've pretty much come up empty.

Just thought of another couple builds worth checking out. First one's not RP, and actually it's not open for another couple days. Steam Forge is a few regions of exploration, shopping, and a club. Think of it as the mall they'll build after the apocalypse. Another is Wastelands - post-apocalyptic side of steampunk once more, but this one's more RP.

There is much more to see in Armada than Mr Zanzibar would have you believe Mr. Footman. I would advise an unbiased view.

Who's biased? Is saying that I haven't been able to get a lot of info considered to be bias? And I don't think I ever said there was nothing to see.

Perhaps one of the folks involved in the place could start a discussion thread in The Parlour , with some background info or a few pictures or something.
