New Babbage

A Steampunk Community

It has been an exciting and challenging time running a city-state for the past 2 years. I see entirely why George Washington set the 2 year term limit in motion within the United States. After two years you feel exhausted in a way that's practically impossible to describe. Even the will to log in seems to not be there for me. I want new challenges, I want to move on. Also I think New Babbage deserves better than my absence. It's time for a new mayor. I hereby invoke a 2 year precedent.

Sadly, it's not as easy as hosting an election. New Babbage is an asset. It is profitable. And it is indeed worth something. It would also be a thoughtless act to simply sell to the highest bidder. Everyone here deserves more than that. I want to sell to someone who has vision, someone who will not only maintain what we have, but strive to grow and evolve it further. We have a unique situation.

Currently, a brand new (and vacant as a desert) sim costs someone $1000 USD to purchase and $295 USD per month to keep. New Babbage is 6 sims of thriving community and active renters, and to use an analogy, an appartment full of renters is worth more than an empty building. I am willing to sell New Babbage to someone for $6,000.00 USD, However there are some strings attached. I want the people of New Babbage to approve you.

If you are interested in buying New Babbage there is nothing I can do to "make" you continue New Babbage. Legally, you could wipe the sims, tell everyone to leave, and build a gorean wonderland (no offense to any who enjoy Gor). But, by having the land owners of New Babbage approve you, I think there's a good chance you'll take New Babbage on a path to greatness.

If you fancy yourself a mayor. If you think you can lead New Babbage, I invite you to post on a second thread I have started "New Babbage Election". Please go there and make your case to the people of New Babbage. Tell them what you will do as Mayor of New Babbage. PLEASE remember, if you win the election, you will have to pay me $6,000.00 USD for New Babbage so only post if you are serious please.

This thread is for any reaction, but only post on the "New Babbage Election" thread if you want to be the mayor. I ask the forum mods to keep this enforced. I think we can have an election before Valentine's Day. After we have a New Mayor, I'd like to share with everyone what I plan to be doing with my time, I think you will all approve.

IF YOU WANT TO RUN: If you are elected, and I receive payment in full. I will provide a "change of power" peroid where I'll make sure you have all the items, contacts, and permissions so that you can run New Babbage.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOTE: You must be a New Babbage landholder with a positive number of days remaining in the rental board by January 25th. The size of your parcel or number of parcels you own does not matter. You simply must own a parcel of land by Jan. 25th. If I am not available you may do land deals through Charlene Trudeau, as she is authorized by me to sell land in New Babbage on my behalf.

Mayor Shaunathan Sprocket,

I remember accidently stumbling upon a meeting in Caledon where a whole group of people in a big room was stood around a map on the floor. i peered through the window where i was spotted by a kind woman who must have been surprised to see a street urchin. She told me to come inside and there i learnt of a new project being planned. As the people left the room i stepped up to the map and told the man standing there that i was looking for a place in Caledon. he turned to me and explained that this map was for a new place called New Babbage separate from Caledon and destined to be different in style to the steampunk seen so far. I explained my interests and thoughts on steampunk and it soon became apparent that we shared a vision of steampunk we both dreamed to see appear in Secondlife. A place of bellowing smoke, dirty gritty dark streets, exposed rusty pipes and cogs. A magnificent place built on industrial elegance. From then on i felt part of a great adventure in creative passion and im still as enthusiastic now as i was back then next to that map when i first met mr Shaunathan Sprocket.

It is sad to hear you go, and i hope you will return for visits, because it has been an honor working as part of the New Babbage team under your initial enthusiasm for steampunk. All that i have done in New Babbage has been for the continuing growth of what you helped me start and i hope what i have done and will continue to do makes you proud.

i watch with apprehension as a new mayor is chosen.

Farewell Shaun, it is your vision and the creativity of those that yoou brought with you that accounts for my own presence not only here but in SL in general as without chance encounters and an awesome first night in SL when Babbage was but a square and the canals but a notion.

I share in Loki's trepidation at the thought of a new mayor heading this way.

I must say Mr Jack and Loki's comments have been much needed, not needlessly emotional, just two of the lynchpins of this community looking back to the city's infancy and how important it is to retain the undimmable spirit of New Babbage. I feel the same way, although I am a relatively new resident i've been loitering about the place since the fall of '07 but I couldn't have put it as eloquently myself. Bravo Mr Jack and Master Loki, you've helped many of us focus on what is important, and it is clear that the survival of the city itself is what we are discussing here as much as that of the residents therein.

Shaun, are you paying the transfer costs for the sims or are you expecting the buyer to pay for this? This would raise the price to $6600 if the buyer is expected to cover this as well, an important thing to know.

Tyger and all .. I think all will be very touched and moved with some of the org Photos SKusting has and working on for the founders day .. New Babbage New and Old .. Art show !!

For those who are not familiar with what Kandace is talking about the full procedure is detailed here:

https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417

(stupid linden links, from that search for Topic #: 4051-4014)

As you can see there is a cost of 100 USD per sim to transfer to a new owner (and remain in the same location). I will pay this move fee. Price stands at $6,000.00 USD.

Thank YOU Shaun as I am sure all believe that is fair of YOU !!

I would highly recommend that the new owner see if it's possible to get all the sims on the same subnet... or at the very least at the same co-location facility to help ease the horrible sim crossings, at the time of the transfer.

Note: I am not quite sure why this post ended up here.

because Your so special Mr Merryman (( one man )) *grins*

In the past i was told it wasn't possible to organise where the data for each sim was held. I guess if its just being transferred to another owner thats just an admin file somewhere. Things might have changed and it would be great if we could though.
