Profile Information
- What has brought you to New Babbage and SL Steampunk?
- Chance encounter in a pub in Oxford brought me to SL and quite by accident to Babbage, an interest in the style of steam punk without knowing it had a name, the feel of the sim (the just the one sim) which was much more than any of the newbie malls and bling-fested tat sims that you initially seem to encounter. Meeting the right people at the right time to make me feel that babbage was a place to stay.
The sim caught my imagination, the atmosphere held it, the people and friends I've made keep me here
- Could you provide a bit of background about yourself?
- Finally down to <500 words, sorry, my editorial skills are somewhat lacking. Please remember that in any RP, none of this is known to a character unless he/she has been told in game. I may post the longer version some place else.
Beq Timeline
Beq was born into the court harem of the Rulam Devleti at the height of that
dynasty's
power and influence. Her mother dies in child birth, her father unknown.
Named Be'aladen fahirle ben Kulam'a (pron. bEkaladen fAhirle ben kUlamka), or,
if translated literally into the language of the new world, "from dark light comes, daughter of Autumn flower".
Age <5 Hidden from the court, cared for by mother's friend Cem (pron. Jem)
Age 5-9 educated as Corigye, tutored in life skills, science, mathematics and
engineering, languages art and love as befitted her expected future
Age 9 the state fell to political revolution, Few survived to flee, among them
Cem, her charge Beq and Beq's best friend Talem (aka Tali). They joined other
refugees heading away from the state.
Age 10, they arrive in Estelan Free State. The older women establish a high
class brothel but are murdered in a fire attack by rival crime lords. Only Beq
and Talem survived, thrust selflessly to safety by Cem.
Age 11-13 the girls lived on the steets.They lived hand to mouth through begging
and petty theft.
Age 13 Beq was caught stealing fruit from a greengrocer's stall and was sold as
a bonded slave to pay her penal debt.
Age 13-16 For 3 years Beq was raped and beaten nightly as a child whore. Beq
steals small amounts of cash or possesions and passes them to Talem who refuses
to abandon Beq
Age 16 Beq escaped. They left the city and travelled far. Beq had taken to
carrying a handgun at all times. More spiritual Talem frowns upon this.
Age 17 They used the savings that Talem and Beq had scraped together through the
dark years to start anew. Beq and Talem became lovers and moved into a room
above an inn. Beq works as a librarian.
Age 17-19 they lived in peace and relative comfort.
Beq has learned much and becomes an assistant to an industrialist, helping his business develop. She studies engineering with his sponsorship.
Age 19 Beq returned from work to find the door broken down. A man standing over
Talem, threatening rape. Talem lay sobbing already beaten and bloody. Beq fought the intruder, her gun was fired. The
intruder fled and was never apprehended. Talem died in the arms of her lover
killed by a bullet fired by the weapon she so hated.
Age 19-23 Beq, despondent at her loss, ploughed everything into her work and studies. She could no longer stay in their rented room and moved around regularly. Her industrialist mentor allowed her freedom to run his projects as she felt fit, she worked endlessly to avoid sleep and the terrors that lurk therein.
Age 24 A chance meeting introduced her to the City state of New Babbage, a new
start, overseas away from the continent that held so much pain for her. Her industrialist mentor gives her a parting gift of references and finance, a reward for all she has done for him.
Present day - New Babbage is/was a delight. An expanding city state, thriving in
the new industrial boom. Nobody in New Babbage asked of her past, the majority
of the residents were immigrants like her, perhaps themselves refugees from past
lives best left untold. Her education, her emotional training, helps cover
the scars of the intervening years and she now lives as a relatively well
respected lady of her own means within the New Babbage community. She misses Talem so much.

I was sitting in my home in the pailsades on Sunday when there came a knock at the door. It was a smartly dressed young lad, in a new uniform, proclaiming him to be from the new telegraph office.
"Miss Janus?", he enquired, and tkaing my nod as affirmation, he presented me with transcript of a message from Steelhead, from the office of the Baron no less.

My diary found
I am a terrible and intermittent diarist. MY old diary was lost iin the September floods but has turned up. I have thus moved it back on to my desk and intend to write more.
I do not intend to do more here than link to it though as the diary is much more in character than the Ning.

- I am working on an annotated bibliography of Steampunk titles -- graphic novels, short stories, collections, novels. The Babbage library will get a copy of the finished product. I believe Sir JJ is heading up an exhibit so he is trying to collect information on all things Steampunk.
