Thanks for the efforts. As someone who works in web development including user interface design, I can confirm their arguments are ludicrous!

What has brought you to New Babbage and SL Steampunk?
I have built a line of in-world computation devices...scientific calculators in the form of slide rules, which I sell at my shop, Bolyai Plaza Instruments, located along the quay in Babbage Square.

The slide rule played a key role in Victorian engineering and is an important steampunk icon. James Watt, who was originally an instrument maker, developed a more accurate slide rule which he used to aid in the design of his steam engines.

Steam Powered Observatory

I confess to being a fan of Layton Destiny. If you haven't seen his Cornish Steam Engine in Caledon Moors, you should make the trip. He has created another masterpiece: a fanciful steam driven orrery and observatory.

You must sit in the chair to operate the engine. See it at the Alchemy Sims.

James Cameron's Avatar

A teaser trailer for James Cameron's new 3D movie "Avatar" is now available and it looks incredible.

It is certainly not steampunk, but this sci-fi adventure makes heavy use of 3D computer graphics straight from a virtual world. Set in the 22nd century, humans are attempting to deal with the indigenous humanoids on another planet. The mind of a human operator (the protagonist) is somehow linked to a genetically engineered body made to appear identical to the aliens. Since he is a paraplegic, he… Continue

My Fifteen Minutes of Fame

I hope I may be forgiven a bit of shameless self promotion. The Air Kraken has been featured in Miss Bettina Tizzy's blog "Not Possible In Real Life."

If you have not yet been kraken hunting on Lovelace Liberty, well....I understand. It's not for the faint of heart....:)

All We Are Is Pixels in the Wind

More that once I have been asked how I managed to get several kites flying near one another to move in similar directions. Of course the answer is that the kites are just following the wind, but it has dawned on me that many people don’t realize that Second Life has Wind. It’s actually a very windy place.

I shouldn’t be surprised that some of us are strangers to the SL wind. After all, our avatars can’t feel it directly. Generally, it takes a script to detect the wind and react to it, although… Continue

Out in Real Life my father still swears by his slide rule, having spent a career as a transducer designer at Bell and Howell in the 1960's and 1970's. He tried to teach me it's secrets, but it eluded me back then. Perhaps I will try again soon, with the help of one of your devices.

My dear Mr. Questi,

I so enjoyed meeting you today. While flying the kite I purchased in your shop over Port Babbage I made a great many new acquaintences. You must surely start advertising your kites not only as the most well-made in SL, but also as instant friend-making machines!
