What has brought you to New Babbage and SL Steampunk?
I am a hardcore reader and fan of the Victorian period when England ruled literature, arts, and the world. Combine that with a fascination of cyberpunk and danger and where else would I be? In Babbage, naturally. Steampunk has found a near perfect expression here in SL.

I am drawn to the creative spirit, sense of adventure, and wicked humor found in many of Babbage's denizens.

I adore not knowing what is around the corner in Babbage, not knowing what to expect. Werner Herzog in conversation with Errol Morris:
"If everything was planned, it would be dreadful. If everything was unplanned, it would be equally dreadful."
Could you provide a bit of background about yourself?
Looking back on my childhood, I see now that I had a privileged life. My father, a respected politician, and my mother, a social maven, dearly loved my brother and me. While Eduard and I lacked for nothing growing up, we did not have that air of entitlement that so frequently accompanies wealth. My parents insisted that I be educated abroad so I could learn English and receive a rigorous university education. I am grateful that my parents insisted I leave for my education, because it saved my life.

Life changes, sometimes blindingly fast; my mother died of a fever and my father was assassinated during a political coup. While Eduard was visiting me, a stranger attacked us. Only by the grace of a strange warrior who became my guardian am I still alive. Poor Eduard was slain by the unknown villain. Thus I came to Caledon and then to Babbage. I am alone and trying to discover the villain's identity as best I can.

Thus began my new life.

With the passage of time here in Babbage, I am more confident in my ability to negotiate the streets and to recognize friend from foe. This once quiet bluestocking has developed an edge. I seek the villain who murdered my brother. I seek answers.

Loaded with attitude, fiercely independent, and sometimes funny, I will find what I want to know.

The Fabulous Maker Faire

First of all, my sincere apologies for the hit or miss quality of the photographs. I had to share with you a few pictures taken at Maker Faire in Austin, TX.

While not strictly steampunk, the event captures the steampunk spirit of inventiveness and imagination. What could be better than being greeted at the entrance to the expo center by a fish car with a lobster singing bawdy songs? Or watching RoboGames (my inner geek thrilled and chilled) as the crowd cheered the various death dealing robots… Continue

Be careful who you fall in with in Babbage. There are a few unsavory types around. And they would lead your pursuers right to you. You are welcome to hole up in Ruby's if need be, and I am quite sure Miss Capalini would allow you to seek refuge in her store. There are many who keep an eye on that place and keep it safe.

Named after Serafina Pekkala, I aspired at one time to be like her: a strong, independent warrior. Unfortunately, tragedy struck and I have other matters to attend to -- like survival.

I am sorry that my sharpening of my surgical blade caused you concern last night. I am sure you'll agree though that, as far as future patients are concerned, a sharp blade is better than a blunt one.
It seems that two of the terrors of Babbage are now off the streets - the hand is burned and the murder apprehended.
I fear that Miss Lubezki's sighting of the strange contraption does not bode well for the peace of mind of our fine city's residents.

(Not sure I want to start a blog) A tear rolled down my cheek as I scanned the New Babbage street. Angrily, I wiped it away. Too much time has passed in crying. Weak, silly, womanish tears, I told myself. Get over it. Get.Over.It.

Your parents and your brother are dead. Happens all the time. You are nothing special. Get over it.

Oh, but in quiet moments when I am not on guard, a phrase, a memory, an image of my life before enters my mind.

I was loved once.
I was a pampered daughter and sister in an upper middle class family,
I was able to study abroad and not pressed into an early marriage.
I had a life.
And what is this, I wondered as I continued my morning routine of checking the street before leaving my hiding place.
Reduced circumstances? Existence?
I will survive.

Journal entry
Learning how to live using one's own resources takes skill along with a bit of luck now and then. How to eat? How to avoid trouble? I admit I was relieved when I was told to move along after discovering poor Miss Justice's body. What if I was accused of her murder? What if my discovery brought me unwelcome publicity?

Egad, how to wash up properly?
I have much to learn.

*psst* *whispers* As for the how to wash up properly, if you look in my loft in the Palisades, behind a screen in the far corner of the room..... there's a steam powered bathtub! Go ahead, enjoy!

Thank you, Miss Writer, for the offer to try out your new fangled steam powered bathtub. You are the very soul of generosity! You have allowed me to spend many a night in your airship, and you've never complained about my pillow and blanket stowed beneath the seats of your ship. I must purchase some bath salts in a nice girly scent as a present to you!

Ow! *arches her back, then stretches* After a few hours of practice, that bow gets heavy. Look at all of the scratches and scrapes on my arms! *sigh*
Still too slow, but I am good enough for a first attack. Worried that I still lack the strength for sustained battle. I must keep practicing, but first, a little medical care. *goes off in search of plasters for her arms*
