Most of us are relatively "free" because historically so many made the ultimate sacrifice. That thought needs preserving. Who knows where we would be now if it wasn't for such bravery and selflessness.

Just as an aside here, as I need clarification (thus I am not refelcting my opinion on the matter before anyone pounces!) I thought the issue was more with the practice of magic and fae ways in New Babbage rather than simply the appearance of the ...

Yeah I think Mr Tenk has a point, shame really as it seems somewhere people can take stock of their position in SL and perhaps talk to others, a sort of LL "naughty step". That said, it also must have been populated by some rather unsavoury chara...

What has brought you to New Babbage and SL Steampunk?
I believe I came across New Babbage in its relative infancy when it was still finding its feet (I will attempt to confirm this) and left, a little nonplussed. Some time later I stumbled upon it again and the transformation was startling. I instantly felt at home and it took me some time to really discover why, but the sheer atmosphere, authenticity and consistency drew me in and is yet to loosen its grip. When I was lucky enough to befriend some of the inhabitants I soon discovered New Babbage's other jewel...its people. Never have I come across such a warm, talented, commonly-motivated and hard-working co-operative, every member a credit to the town, admirably overseen and facilitated by Mr Sprocket.

The whole 'Steampunk' phenomenon was all but new to me, of course I had seen some references in popular culture but it wasn't until I explored parts of Caledon that I was truly hooked. And what Caledon lacked in it's sprawling, sometimes rather sterile and often historically inconsistent realms, New Babbage more than made up for. One can always hear the heart of New Babbage beating.
Could you provide a bit of background about yourself?
Born of a darkness, Tyger Freenote has all but erased his infancy from his mind, his only recollections being of his twin brother Tyger Indigo somehow always offering some warmth, courage and respite. Tyger Freenote vaguely recalls fleeing from an unseen foe, or perhaps many, wielding burning torches on an island, driving him onto a beach and into an ocean, swimming clumsily out to sea, turning back to see his brother perish, seemingly surrounded by figures, and aflame.

Drowning, and darkness followed, and then but a glimmer of air and light, whilst lying on the deck of a ship, bound for an unknown destination. The amnesiac Freenote awakened, slouched in a dockyard of a large merchant city, hair and fur matted, emaciated. Painfully aware of his 'different' appearance he hid among the pallets and machinery of the docks, filching a fish here, a morsel of indefinite origin there, until eventually he was noticed by a travelling showman, seized by his lackeys, yet offered food and shelter (albeit of the transient variety) on the condition that he joined his travelling exhibition of atrocities. Mocked, prodded, derided and cursed by day, by night Freenote's thirst for knowledge and culture led him to devour every text that he could lay his claws on. It was only when a wealthy heiress was astounded to hear the hybrid Freenote recite the poetry of Blake when he believed himself to be unobserved that she bought out the reluctant showman and gave Tyger lodgings at her home. Allowing his yearning for the arts and the manners and ways of mankind to run unallayed in her library, she also went about making him a gentleman, albeit a peculiarly feline one.

Sensing his restlessness and hunger for further knowledge and experiences, his benefactor reluctantly sent him on his way, a regular stipend always on hand to finance his endeavours. His wanderings led him to many places, but seldom was he welcomed by society, rather cast out, exiled and sometimes beaten as an aberration, a mockery of God's creations.

Freenote took to travelling in disguise, and eventually alighted in the town of New Babbage, where he instantly seemed to blend in. An air of eccentricty seemed to pervade everything and there were plenty of dark places where he could rest, take stock, perhaps plan his next journey but always feel reluctant to actually embark. One fine day one of Babbage's inhabitants, a tradeswoman, took him under her wing (or perhaps it was the other way around), her curiosity seemingly piqued by his disguise and obvious inquisitiveness.

In time his meanderings took him further afield, leading him to eventually take up residence with a successful businesswoman in another part of the metaverse, but New Babbage has always been a home from home, a place of solace and refuge, always full of new curiosities. And the people have never been anything but warm, accepting, friendly and inspirational. Of late, Freenote has found himself returning to the town, watching new features spring up with great interest, and has recently along with his partner Meadow refurbished an abandoned Gelato parlour at Wheatstone Waterways, where their time is divided between looking after the owner and benefactor of the parlour (another cat) and feverishly(!) working on new varieties of unique ice cream, which should be on sale soon!

I'm the operator of my kinda ungainly but awesome Tora Calculator!

watch?v=6LCu3b_1yVY

Some sideways surfing led me to this, perhaps not strictly in-theme but awesome nonetheless, this is apparently a Japanese copy of a mechanical calculator produced by a guy called Odhner, renamed the Tiger calculator...rawr!

What is a little disturbing however is that the guy providing the voiceover sounds a lot like Torley

Is there an "American Nerd" generic voice that i've been unaware of? Fess up people!

((ATI Radeon and SL...Reunited at last!))

For anyone who actually bought their computer before they discovered SL, and are lumbered with an ATI Radeon graphics card, and furthermore had major problems with the "Atmospheric Shaders" setting being on (it turned the sky yellow and clouds black for me, and various other problems for me and others), the latest drivers from the AMD/ATI site and/or the Catalyst Control Center version 9 (many would advise just get the drivers!) seems to correct this....woot!

I can see clouds again! And proper… Continue

The pleasure was all mine, I assure you. I was glad to eventually cast my misgivings regarding your establishment aside, as after all, what place could be more authentic and "of our time"?

Greetings Mr. Freenote. A pleasure to find you here in this forum -- and from the sound of it, you are most fortunate to be amongst the living! I had never suspected your sad past nor your loss of a twin brother (if he has indeed passed to the other side...)

Yes, I did my best to try to keep him calm. I should keep my eye out for him if he is still about. The poor dear, he seemed so confused.

Mr. Freenote, I was very surprised as it was my understanding your brother was deceased. He was incoherent, and there was something important he was trying to say.. but could not seem to say it. Miss Feuerstein grasped the situation as well as I, that there was something terribly amiss. I was only concerned for his welfare.. and would have endeavored to carry him somewhere, but like a wounded animal, he would have lashed out at anyone or anything that would have tried to touch him.

Mr. Freenote, it may not be any help, but I believe he was trying to lead us to the lighthouse. We were halfway there when he disappeared.. I too, shall keep my eyes open for him and I hope he can remember that he has friends..

Was your brother that poor traumatized man who seemed to have come up from the sea?
