for my tenancy business I use a rental vendor that can change the texture depending on its rental state. so i thought about a more victorian vendor variant than a rusty box with rivets.

If you're like me, you've often had to explain what New Babbage is, both to people inside of Second Life and to those strange creatures not of our world. It usually goes something like this:
'New Babbage?'
'Yes, it's a 19th century victorian/steampunk city-state.'
(bl… Continue
Oh nos! Grandpa! Why did you 'ave to send me that dreadful 'and. There's me actin' in good faith and allowin' the good citizens of New Babbage to share in my excitement an' you 'ave to go and send this postcard!
That's the last time I trust somethin' you send me! Next your gonna be tellin' me that the n… Continue
See Miss Common's post, in her blog here, to get the inventor's point of view.
It only took one event to make me a bumper boat enthusiast. I hope we run many more of these, and we can get represe… Continue
My beloved airship, the SS Spanky, has been sent off to have her decks cleaned and balloons repaired. The old girl had been leaking a bit, and was sagging in places a girl does not care to droop. *cough* She will return as soon as she's been set to rights! I know some of you have grown accustomed to seeing her up above Her Dark Materials, as have I. Since a few folk had asked about her disappearance, I thought I'd let you know!
Hmm. I had a second thing to mention, but now it's gone right out o… Continue
I suppose I had better give the news about myself first: I am no longer a sabretooth. I am not sure what happened, but I have lost my fangs, and my fur has changed colour. I am now a White Persian Leopard, if I am to believe the book of anatomy. It's quite odd, when one goes through a change of species, but I must admit I am lucky this time; my fangs had grown quite tiresome, and I had been told they looked a bit intimidating... That's anything but the aura I longed to emit. But in any case, I b… Continue

Continued from The Life And Times Of Ceejay Writer - Part One
After a few weeks of employment as the cook's assistant (and gaining a few needful pounds from spending my days around more food than I was used to), I was summoned to the personal wagon of Mister Feliz Fritado, the owner of the circus, and our ringmaster. He fed me chocolates and walked circles around me, nodding and stroking his mustach… Continue
Dear Diary,
Recovery of the thumb from the mysterious hand has not gone as well as I had hoped.
I spent the last two days attaching a crane to the back of one of my boats. This afternoon I got my dive suit and sailed out to the location of the thumb.
I dove down and was relieved to find that th… Continue
http://hiberniaskids.blogspot.com/2008/06/streaming-music-from-mp3tunes-service.html
The service is MP3Tunes, which offers a somewhat crippled free service (lower storage, ad insertions)
The downside is that it can be kind of clunky to implement compared to the streamlined Media Master approach. You have to install a file synchronizer and find out the stream information from WinAmp or similar. Al… Continue

I thought I'd share with you all a side project I've been working on, rebuilding a friend's empty (mostly) island from scratch. If you've not seen me in Babbage, this is probably why. It's not finished yet, lots of… Continue
Well, it is quite good I found this journal... It shall serve my endevours to document the goings-on of New Babbage quite well. I suppose if I were to follow the trend, I should write about the murder of Miss Justice and the finger disappearing, but I wasn't there to see either. This journal shall be to remind myself and show others the odd things I have been a part of, and so I shall turn to a very nice event earlier today; the little dinner hosted by Miss Razor at 'Ruby's'.
I had come because… Continue

Dear Diary,
I have been thinking a lot lately about what could be learned from that strange hand that has caused so much news lately, if it were to be studied closer. If it really is the cause of the illness that spread so quickly throughout the city, then perhaps by studying it we could produce more powerful medicines, or weapons, depending on who did the studying.
Unfortunately, when I went next door to the Emporium, every last piece of the hand had been looted. I decided to go take a stroll… Continue
Well, then, I've had a few people inquire and show their curiosity, and rather than laugh outright and change the subject, I suppose I should tell my new friends and neighbors here in New Babbage about my notorious past. Ohhh, doesn't that sound as if there should be some dastardly music lurking behind those words? I wish I could provide that, but sadly, my musical talents are about as scarce as wholesome meat pies are down in Loner Lane. If you'd like to fill in the music in your mind as we go,… Continue
I'd like to invite all my fellow New Babbagerinianites to join the group I started for information regarding Novem: the Muses Playhouse (e.g., events, job postings, etc.) The group is called (duh) Novem: The Muses Playhouse. All announcements pertaining to Novem will be posted here, rather than in the regular NewBabbage Ning.
I hope to see you here!

For the last two evenings I've been building a working replica of the Civil War Submarine CSS Hunley. I finished the building and most of the texturing last night, and wrapped the texturing up tonight. Now, Mr. Merryman and I shall begin scripting it. With luck, it will be sea worthy by the beginning of next week. Then, no wooden hulled ship will be safe!!!!
Contrary to the rumormongering of certain individuals, I was not fired from Bow Street. I resigned due to unrelated internal affairs. If you don't believe me, feel free to ask the Mayor. Kindly go back to gossiping about someone else now.
I also have the fondest wish that the alts of the aforementioned people would stop trying to be my friend.
With love,

After spending some time conversing with Miss Ordinal Malaprop concerning the Babbage Railways, she imparted to me that she had originally attempted to convince the Mayor that trains would be better supplanted by airships. Even in the modern world, we have trains, but most of the economic 'heavy lifting' so to speak is done by vehicles, 18-wheelers primarily, simply because they are far more versatile. So I asked myself, 'What does an 18-wheeler look like in an industrialized Steampunk nation?'… Continue
My hopes are to spend a pleasant Friday evening in my beloved New Babbage tonight... but I am fretting due to a severe thunderstorm watch that is imposing upon my hidden keyboard-operator-person back in the land of RealWorld. Please cross your fingers that her Tesla-juice holds out! It is Friday the 13th, after all!
I do hope to see many of my wonderful neighbors tonight, weather permitting!

I'm not used to Blogs that contain actual useful working space above the header graphic. I seem to have a blind eye to anything that happens up there, at any site I visit.
Consequently, it has taken until TONIGHT for me to realize that my mail is sorted out up there, and that's where I can actually write private emails to you lovely people. I literally never saw my mail, and have been replying in alternate avenues.

While researching a topic that could only be described as 'not steampunk,' I happened across, purely by chance, this rather intriguing morsel of information:
The concept of frequency hopping was first alluded to in the 1903 U.S. Patent 723,188 and U.S. Patent 725,605 filed by Nikola Tesla in July 1900. Tesla came up with the idea after demonstrating the world's first radio-controlled submersible boat in 1898, when it became apparent the wireless signals controlling the boat needed to…Continue
I am a terrible and intermittent diarist. MY old diary was lost iin the September floods but has turned up. I have thus moved it back on to my desk and intend to write more.
I do not intend to do more here than link to it though as the diary is much more in character than the Ning.

Being new in town. Being something as nebulous as a writer. Being... me. And now I've got this hacking cough and a limited supply of chamomile and lavender to make tea. *cough* I'm so tired, though I've slept through most of the day. I went for a walk, but all the time I strolled the streets, learning the shops and the streets, I just craved being home and on my couch. Four times I forced myself up and out into the fresh air, in hopes of shaking off whatever I've contracted, but each time I foun… Continue
So in an effort to get the Babbage Workers Union going I built a small shanty town pub behind my shop. There is free beer for workers, so stop on by and have a beer and hang out.

I have been so afraid to leave the premises of Novem as of late. I have seen that man again, and now Miss Lily tells me he has actually entered the Playhouse and asked for me by name. Our neighbor, Bela Lubezki, has said I could hide in her factory if need be, and I fear I may have to take her up on that offer. Even Novem does not seem safe to me any more. Miss Lily told the man to leave, and he did so, but I am still fearful he will find me. I have even gone so far as to dress much more conserv… Continue
After some time, and much to my delight, we've added a small conservatory to our soapworks. I will now be able to cultivate my own herbs, which in turn will decrease my production expenses, as I will no longer need to purchase these very important ingredients. At the present time, I have lavender, chamomile, a very healthy rosemary plant, mallow, a lovely lemon balm and two varieties of mugwort, all happily digging their roots into their new home.
Does there exist a scent more soothing to the s… Continue
Oh Grandpa what 'ave you got yourself into? It seems 'es not come out of this one un-'urt!
Well that's a nasty lookin' thing an' no mistake! Lucky old me got an 'and through the post an' once I can get it embalmed I'll be stickin' it in the shop for all to see!
A recent visitation at Polymath Rock prompted your humble narrator to record the event for posterity's sake. Herein contained is part one of THE DARK SECRETS OF PONDICHERRY CASTLE (a magick lantern show).

I have received several inquiries into the possibility that I may be building a library in New Babbage. After purchasing a lot from Mr. Doyle, this is more than a possibility. I am currently drawing up plans to build a large Public Library servicing the general public with public domain works. There shall be several genres featured with the hope of continually adding works, including a wide variety of steampunk literature and work by residents of Second Life.
I shall continually keep an update… Continue

Bay City - Moosehead
Beginning in Moose Beach, I step into the roadway before me into Bay City - Moosehead. There is a canal with a bridge over it and quite a number of attractive street lamps. I have heard that this city was constructed by MolePeople, and if so, they are quite skilled crafts..creatures.
I have discovered a pleasant park named Daley Park with both a road trolley and a canal trolley station. The road Trolley seems to travel the main thoroughfare named route 66.

My builder has developed dropsy and is no longer able to complete building of the "DR Laslzo Sanitorium and Health Spa"
This is a large building that will consist of 3 floors, a laborotary, living accomodation and health spa.
I am therefore placing this advertisement for any inspired builders to take on this very interesting project.
Please contact me if you are interested.
A fair price will be paid of course!

I quietly made it through the entrance into the city. It has atmosphere and i dont mean the steam of busy engines that is omnipresent here. I can taste change. It is in the air. The very minds of the people around me seem to spark new ideas while the walk around in their daily chore.

New Babbage has been an extremely kind place to me.. and I have taken to it's citizens a great deal. I know I tend to hide away when working.. and it takes quite a bit for Mr. Whitfield to drag me out of the workshop.
Thank you, to it's citizens and to the city itself.. for making me feel at home over the past few months.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Civilization has found Gaeta's northern bounds. Land Barons with no sense of planning have carved up several northern regions without any sense of rhyme or reason that I can fathom.

Work on the expansion wing of Professor Nishi's museum has begun. It is actually a much larger structure than the original museum, and, as such, is taking quite some time to accomplish. It feels good to be building again, and spending more time in New Babbage. The Professor has quite a few pieces for exhibit that she has collected from various expeditions the past few months, and this new expansion is going to give her the space for proper display.
I'm actually quite excited, though the work is… Continue
