First of all, my sincere apologies for the hit or miss quality of the photographs. I had to share with you a few pictures taken at Maker Faire in Austin, TX.
While not strictly steampunk, the event captures the steampunk spirit of inventiveness and imagination. What could be better than being greeted at the entrance to the expo center by a fish car with a lobster singing bawdy songs? Or watching RoboGames (my inner geek thrilled and chilled) as the crowd cheered the various death dealing robots battling it out?
What about the life size Mousetrap game that, unlike the one you had in childhood, actually works?
And the Diet Coke and Mentos Mega Fountain (104 bottles of fizzy fun)?
Maker Faire exhorts us to "make our future" and had all sorts of interactive displays and exhibits and opportunities to participate in robotics, music, sustainable living, crafts, science and engineering.
The fantastic music groups deserve a whole other blog post, but permit me to share the description of one group I enjoyed listening to, THAT Damned Trio: " A roving acoustic trio of musicians playing the songs of hobos, pirates, and circus folk from around the world. THAT Damned Band sounds like a circus trainwrecked into a hobo camp where Eastern European klezmers are learning Irish drinking songs from Tom Waits."
It was totally overwhelming. Totally fun. I wish you all could have come.
